About Us
My wife Cindy and I live in a very rural area of the north central Arkansas Ozark Mountains. Actually they're just big hills but we like to call them mountains.
The nearest town of any size is Mountain View; the self-proclaimed Folk Music Capitol of America.
Living IN the woods among the various species of trees provides me an opportunity to develop an understanding of these amazing plants and their importance to the health and well being of the creatures that surround them. Working with wood is a very tactile and rewarding experience. Being an organic product each piece of wood has it's own pecularities and surprises.
My philosophy about being a wood craftsman is simple. I believe alot of the old traditional methods of woodworking are still the best way to do things. Unfortunately many woodworkers have switched almost exclusively to powered tools. They have their place in a shop but handtools should not be overlooked or forgotten.
I don't mass produce things or use fancy automated machinery to speed things along. My jewelry boxes and chests for instance are each a little different than their predecessors. I don't work off a set of plans to make ten or twenty of the same thing. That is boring and I believe a customer likes to know that what they are getting from me is unique and not mass produced.
I can create a piece entirely with handtools but the additional time and effort requires a larger price tag. Normally I like to use power tools at the beginning of a project, during the "rough" stages, and then use handtools for the joinery and finishing. It is a balance of sorts.
My work reflects honest simple design without alot of bells and whistles. I build things to last a lifetime and beyond. Wood moves ALL THE TIME. It is never in a state of equilibrium and therefore all my work is geared toward allowing for this movement. Fine joinery is a goal for me but the finest joinery will not survive if the wood is not allowed to move.
The wood I use is almost all local species- ash, walnut, cherry, red and white oak, sycamore, sassafras, persimmon, and pine. I air dry the rough lumber and have a small solar\wood-fired kiln to gently move it along if necessary. I do not use foreign wood species that is not sourced from sustainable forests.
If you have an idea about something I will be honest with you and tell you whether I am the right person to meet your desires. Honesty is my number one policy.
